Defense Department Report Concludes Hegseth Placed Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing secret information in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The chat group in question contained particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Potential Risk to Troops

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be released later this week.
